CRPROF-NQF5-KM-02.1-2.4 Knowledge Assignments

This Module (2.1 – 2.4) has seven Integrated Assessment Criteria.  All the IACs are based on and on the Knowledge topics in Module 2.1.

There are no practical components or workplace experience components in this module

IAC0101: John 1:1-3 declares: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made.”

  1. How does this text define the relationship between the Old and New Testament?
  2. Show and give evidence that there is a definite relationship between the Testaments.

Explanatory notes: This question consists of more than one answer and could be divided into two parts, i.e., 1) and 2).

  • Give enough Biblical evidence to validate the claim that John 1:1-3 makes. Use your Bible and prove that you can find definite proof that the Word with God from the beginning will confirm a valid relationship between the two Testaments; thus, are John 1: 1-3 the link between the two Testaments.  
  • Furthermore, use this validation with additional scriptural evidence to prove that there is a definite link between the two Testaments as per section 1.4.1

IAC0102: Give a brief overview of the origin, historical background, structure, and message of any three of the Pauline letters as discussed in this module.

Your answer to include the following:

  1. The origin,
  2. The historical background,
  3. The structure,
  4. And the message is intended for the original audience.

Explanatory notes: Use your Study Bible and any additional sources and identify the requirements as set out in the Four bullets. Then Briefly (concisely or in a few words, in a sentence or two) describe where Paul’s letters originated from, what was the historical setting at the time the letter was written, what is the structure and lastly what message did Paul convey the intended audience.  Please refer to section 1.2.3 “An overview of the Pauline letters”, for guidance on how to answer this question.

IAC0103: The Bible is a literary work consisting of various genres or groups according to a specific style. List the different types of genres in the Bible and the characteristics that define that genre. How does each of the genres impact Bible interpretation?

Explanatory notes: This question consists of more than one answer and could be divided into two parts, a) and b). Genres refer to the styles or categories of writing used throughout the Bible, and the entire Bible will be classified under a particular Genre. For example, music Genres can be Blues Music, Jazz Music, Rhythm and Blues Music or Gospel Music. Thus, the Bible has different genres. 

  • List the three main writing styles as per section 1.7 and describe the unique characteristics that define each of the three styles. Include at least one example of a Bible book that relates to the Genre in your answer. If a Genre has sub-categories, you may include at least one of the sub-categories under the particular Genre. 
  • You must show how each of the three (3) major genres impact Bible interpretation – thus, if you identified the style a book was written in, how will that style affect how you would interpret the Book.

IAC0104: The Module lists three views on the inspiration and authority of the Bible. How do the different views relate to you as a person, and how does it influence your theology and ethical outlook?

Explanatory notes: This question consists of more than one answer; please ensure that your response is complete and that your answer will reflect the full requirements. Section 1.5.3 page 39, describes the three principal views on the inspiration and authority of the Bible and the way that the authority of the Bible will influence one’s theology. This will also determine the place of Scripture in their lives and ethics.

Please give a short explanation of each of the three different views. How do the different views that you just described impact YOU, how do these views influence YOUR theology (please take note that it must be your understanding of what you believe)? Please explain how these three views affect your ethical outlook – your outlook of right and wrong in terms of faith.

IAC0201: Describe how different faith traditions deal with the four major types of biblical interpretation: literal, moral, allegorical, and anagogical.

Give a short description of the Major Biblical interpretations and details of a Faith tradition that follows at least one of the interpretations.

Requirements: The student is to give a short description of all four of the major biblical interpretations as per section 2.1, page 45. Based on your description of the literal, moral, allegorical and anagogical interpretations, identify one (1) faith tradition – see examples hereafter – that can be linked or associated with one of the types of Biblical interpretation mentioned. Thus, you do not need to link a faith tradition to each of the interpretations; choose one of the above and identify a church that follows your chosen interpretation. 

A few examples of faith traditions would include but not be limited to: 

  • African Methodist Episcopal
  • Anabaptist
  • Anglican
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
  • Episcopal
  • Methodist
  • Pentecostal
  • Roman Catholic
  • Southern Baptist Convention

IAC0202: Discuss the principles of understanding and interpreting the Bible for our time and situation. Apply the four basic hermeneutics processes to verify your response.

Explanatory Notes: The student will be able to understand how to get a Bible message across for our times and situations today through the basic hermeneutic process as described in section 2.1, pages 52 – 55. You need to briefly explain how the principles of a) researching the historical context, b) doing exegesis, c) applying hermeneutics, and d) conducting homiletics in today’s day context will give an understanding of interpreting the Bible for an audience today. 

Word count: 250 – 300 Words. 

IAC0203: Identify and give a short definition of irresponsible Bible interpretation practices that must be avoided.

Requirements: The student is to identify at least four irresponsible Bible interpretation practices as described in section 2.3 to avoid. You must give a short explanation (Description) of each of the irresponsible Bible interpretations identified. Take note that you need to be able to show why these practices must be avoided.
